What Materials Are Used To Make The Blades Of Benchmade’s Fixed Blade Knives?

The term blade is used to describe the housing that houses the sharpened edge of a knife. These blades can come in many lengths, widths, and thicknesses. There are even some lengthier blades!

Many people look forward to getting their knives professionally sharpened to add more dimension and craft to the knife. A good knife-maintenance policy includes taking it out for a quick sharpening every few months, though hopefully not too often.

With the right tools and patience, you can make some very fine knives. Many people purchase benchmade fixed blades because they are very reliable but easy to use.


Ti is the most common metal for blades. Carbon fiber is a similar material that differs in density and texture.Ti can be used as a passive or active blade steel.

Passive blades are created by rasping a piece of carbon fiber to create a disk and then hardening this disk with a process known as stamping. The stamped disk is then de-pressed and finish-fitted into the blade, adding strength and offsetting the weight of the steel.

Active blades require more effort on the part of the maker to create. De-pressing and finish-fitting require machining processes done by the user such as grinding or engraving.

Since carbon steel does not stick to your fingers or toolsteel like normal steel does, it can be used for making knives with more abandon! Many makers use carbon steel because it is less sensitive to heat conditions.


Bronze is one of the most popular materials used in knife blade manufacturing. It has a rich color and can be machined to various angles and thicknesses.

Bronze is capable of being cold-worked, heated, and forged into a blade. This process creates some beautiful shapes and patinas on the blade.

Because bronze is hard, it takes more work to create a shape that will break down beautifully on the stone. Many designers use clay as their medium to create the shape their blades need.

Another way to use bronze is as an accent resource. Many designers use chalk or dry erase board material to recreate theirlooks ontheblade.


Copper is one of the most common materials used to make metals. Copper is usually a gray color, making it an easy material to work with.

Copper has a high heat conversion rate, which means it can be melted and formed into a new object. This makes copper very valuable as an element in technology, as well as knives!

Because copper is so plentiful, most knives are made from high quality copper. Some blades are painted first, followed by the hot forging process. Because of this, some knives may not have enough carbon under the steel to maintain its edge, making them less efficient at taking a cut.

Blades made out of copper cannot be paper-mated together like those made out of aluminum can because they would melt away the edge.


The hardest material used to make the blades of a knife is silver. Many knife manufacturers coat their knives in some kind of coating to increase grip, or add luster to the blade.

The process of creating a metal coating on a different material is known as hardening it. When this happens to a knife, it increases the knife’s strength.

Some of these hardening processes include dipping the blade in phosphorous powder, painting the blade with chrome oil, and using solidified glycerin as the coating.

The best way to determine if a knife has been hardened is by looking at the base of the blade. If there is a blackish tint to that area, then you know that it has been hardened.
